Bowles, Garry Joseph (84)
Garry, Mr. Bowles, Dad, Gramps — passed away in his 85th year, surrounded by four generations of family.
Garry was born in Quebec to parents Marjorie (née Thompson) and Hugh Bowles on September 30, 1941. He married his loving wife, Lorraine (née O’Hearn), on July 31, 1965 — a day remembered not only for the start of a lifelong partnership but also for Garry unknowingly wearing two different shoes, a detail that would become a family legend, and a perfect symbol of his easygoing nature and sense of humor.
Shortly thereafter, they had four children in four years — Natalie, Gary (Susan), Dean (Brenda), and Kelly (Jerry). From there, their lives were full and busy. Two played hockey, two played ringette, and both Garry and Lorraine coached over the years, instilling in their children a deep sense of teamwork and community spirit.
Garry was the strong, silent type. He chose his words wisely, and when he spoke, we listened. His lessons were countless — respect, timeliness, hard work, commitment, and the importance of taking care of others.
He was later blessed with grandchildren Jessica (Raymond), Kaylee (Kevin), Paul (Andrea), Curtis, John, Gannon, Mairin, Sarah, and Georgie, and in time with great-grandchildren Adria, Keegan, Ryder, Bextyn, and Ezlie.
After Lorraine’s passing in 2010, Garry seemed lost without her. When he met Dianne she brought warmth and companionship back into his life.
Throughout his life, Garry was known for his steady presence, wry humour, passion for debate, and deep devotion to family. His legacy lives on in the lives he shaped and the values he instilled—kindness, commitment, and the importance of showing up for the people you love.
The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital, especially those in the Hospice Suite, for the exceptional care and compassion they showed Garry and his family. Their kindness and support brought great comfort in his final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Joseph’s Foundation of Elliot Lake in Garry’s memory.
A life well-lived, and a man deeply loved — he will be missed more than words can say.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
