Agnes Farrell

Agnes Farrell (Feb. 27, 1933 – July 12, 2018)
Agnes Farrell died in St. Joseph’s General Hospital, Elliot Lake on July 12, 2018 in her 86th year. Agnes’ parents, Mary and William Farrell, emigrated to Canada from Ireland in the late 1920’s and she was born in Edmonton, AB. Agnes was the middle child of five; she had two brothers, William and Edward, both deceased and is survived by two sisters, Eileen and Patricia (Toronto). Her mother was quite ill after her birth and she was named by the hospital nuns after St. Agnes; she was not given a middle name. Agnes and her family moved to Toronto in 1941. She would reminisce about traveling the train filled with soldiers to Toronto during WWII. Her family settled in the Scarborough area. Sadly, her father died suddenly in 1944 and her mother was left to care for the children. Agnes’ mother worked for many years in the Eaton’s store in downtown Toronto. Agnes was a precocious child who learned to read before she started school and she finished Grade 12 several years ahead of her peers. She worked as a secretary until her marriage to Frank Smith (deceased) of Markham, ON in 1956. She and Frank had two children, Laura and Robert. They lived in Markham, North Bay and Sudbury where Frank worked as a field engineer for Burroughs Business Machines. Agnes and Frank separated in 1966 and Agnes spent many of the following years living and working in Toronto. Approximately 18 years ago, she relocated to Elliot Lake where she enjoyed the affordable small city atmosphere.
Agnes was an independent and friendly person who enjoyed getting out and about. In her earlier years she had a talent for knitting and sewing and in her later years was an avid reader. Her recent life was quiet and uneventful and she passed away peacefully after a series of strokes. She is survived by her daughter Laura (Brad) Vilness of Pender Island, BC and two grandsons (Bryn and Brendan) and her son Robert (Brenda) Smith of Woodstock, ON. She is predeceased by an infant grandson, Tyler Hope Smith. As per her wishes, cremation has taken place. Interment to take place at a later date in Woodlands Cemetery, Elliot Lake.
